Email Campaign
Time or topic bounded action where one or several emails are sent to a defined list of recipients to reach a clear goal.
Also known as: Email Blast, Newsletter Campaign, Mailing
An email campaign is a planned send focused on a clear goal, for example sales, signup, download or reactivation. It usually covers a single email or a short series. Unlike an always-on trigger sequence, the campaign is clearly limited in time, from concept through send to analysis.
How a campaign is built
A campaign starts with a goal and a measurable success metric. Then audience and segment are defined, content and layout of the email are produced, the send time is set and tracking is prepared. Before the send you check preview, spam filter risk, mobile compatibility and all links. After the send you evaluate open rate, click rate, conversion and unsubscribe rate, ideally against previous campaigns.
What drives success
Send time, subject line, preheader, clear message and a fitting call to action are the strongest levers. Mobile optimisation is mandatory, since many recipients read on a phone. Emails that are too long lose attention, those that are too short fail to deliver the message. Regular A/B testing quickly shows which wording, images and calls to action win.
