Double-Opt-In

Signup procedure where a recipient confirms their email address through a confirmation email before being added to a mailing list.

Also known as: Confirmed Opt-In, Verified Subscription

Double-Opt-In is the standard procedure for the legally sound signup to an email mailing list. The recipient enters their address into a form and receives a confirmation email with a personal link. Only the click on that link adds them to the list. This documents in a verifiable way that the signup truly came from the owner of the address.

How Double-Opt-In works legally

In the EU the GDPR requires verifiable consent for marketing emails. Double-Opt-In typically meets this requirement because the confirmation acts as an additional proof. A clean record of the signup is mandatory, with timestamp, IP, form values and details of the confirmation email send. In a dispute these records are your strongest defence.

What to watch for

The confirmation email should be lean and neutral, without marketing messages, because advertising in a confirmation email before the opt-in is complete is legally risky. The gap between signup and confirmation should be short, otherwise the confirmation rate drops noticeably. A clear hint to check the spam folder also helps, since some providers deliver the message there.

Double-Opt-In in JD Mail

JD Mail supports the Double-Opt-In flow end to end: forms create a pending entry on the list, a confirmation email with a unique token is sent automatically, the click activates the entry and writes a full audit log. This means for every active address you can always present a proof of consent.
