KPI (Key Performance Indicator)
Measurable metric that captures how close a tactic, campaign or business is to a defined goal.
Also known as: Key Performance Indicator, Performance Metric
A KPI, short for Key Performance Indicator, is a measurable metric that shows how close an effort is to a defined goal. In marketing KPIs serve as a shared language between leadership, marketing and sales because they translate success into numbers. A KPI is only useful when the underlying goal is well defined.
Picking the Right KPIs
Useful KPIs are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time bound. In email marketing those typically include open rate, click rate, conversion rate, revenue per send and unsubscribe rate. In performance campaigns cost per lead, cost per acquisition and return on ad spend round out the picture. Too many KPIs dilute attention, a tight set of five to eight values is usually enough.
Practice and Pitfalls
A KPI needs a reference base and a comparison window, otherwise the number says nothing. Apparent improvements often turn out to be seasonality or the side effect of a changed measurement logic. Document the data source, the comparison window and the assumptions so the numbers stay comparable over time.
Relevance to the JD Platforms
JD Mail and JD Partner expose their KPIs directly in the dashboard, split by campaign, list, variant and time range. The headline numbers such as volume, opens, clicks, bounces and unsubscribes appear in near real time. JD Leads adds lead quality on top, for example conversion rate on the landing page and on later steps in the funnel. That lets you steer campaigns based on solid numbers instead of gut feeling.
