IP Address

An IP address is the unique address of a device or server in the Internet Protocol. It is the foundation of every data communication on the network. Two variants are used in parallel today, IPv4 with four number blocks and IPv6 with eight hexadecimal groups. IPv4 has become scarce, which is why IPv6 keeps gaining importance.

Static and dynamic

Servers usually have a fixed, static IP address so services remain reliably reachable. Private customers usually receive a dynamic address that can change on each new dial in. Some providers use Carrier Grade NAT so several end customers share a public IP. For identification and security analysis, this distinction matters.

Areas of use

IP addresses are used for addressing servers and devices, for geo location in online advertising, for security functions like blocking certain ranges and for mail server reputation. Spam filters check the IP of incoming mail and how it has behaved in the past. A clean IP reputation is therefore a central prerequisite for good deliverability.
