WhatsApp Business API

Programmatic interface from WhatsApp through which companies send and receive messages at scale.

Also known as: WhatsApp API, WABA

The WhatsApp Business API is the enterprise variant of the messenger, allowing companies to send automated and manual messages, receive replies, and connect workflows. Unlike the smartphone app, the API runs server side and integrates with CRM, helpdesk, and marketing systems. It is the foundation for conversational commerce and service communication on WhatsApp.

What the API offers

Companies can set up templates for recurring messages, for example order confirmations, shipping notifications, or appointment reminders. Templates must be pre approved by Meta, free text is only allowed within a 24 hour service conversation initiated by the user. Images, documents, and interactive buttons are possible.

Pitfalls in practice

Opt in is mandatory, sending without explicit consent risks suspension. Costs accrue per conversation, varying by country and category. Pitfall: many companies underestimate the effort for template maintenance and compliance. Providers such as MessageBird, Twilio, or 360dialog offer Business Solution Provider accounts that ease the access.

Context in marketing work

WhatsApp is suited for short, transactional messages and personal advice, less so for broad scale advertising. Newsletter sending is only allowed within narrow boundaries, especially in the marketing category with clear rules. Used wisely, the channel combines well with email programmes and SMS, complementing classic touchpoints with a direct push variant that earns high attention.
