Traffic
Total visitors and accesses to a website, offer or app, broken down by source and quality.
Also known as: Website Traffic, Visitor Volume
Traffic is the sum of all accesses to a website or digital offering. The usual distinction is between unique visitors and sessions, since one visitor can generate several sessions per day. Raw traffic on its own says little, only the combination with source, dwell time and conversion produces a reliable picture of actual impact.
Sources and what they mean
Direct traffic comes from typing the URL or using bookmarks. Organic traffic comes from unpaid search results. Paid traffic comes from ad clicks, for example Google Ads or Meta. Referral traffic links in from other websites. Social traffic comes from organic posts on social networks, email traffic from campaigns and newsletters. Each source has its own conversion pattern.
Quality beats volume
High traffic without the right audience generates load and cost without result. Anyone buying traffic should therefore not chase the cheapest click but the source with the best dwell time and the highest conversion. Organic traffic can also lose value when it comes from topically unrelated long tail search queries.
In everyday marketing
In monthly reporting, traffic is typically broken down by source, device and landing page. A sudden drop on a single source points to a technical problem or a penalty, a sudden spike to bot activity or a viral effect. Advertisers running list marketing additionally watch the share of returning visitors, since this indicates the long term value of a campaign.
