Visibility

Measure of how strongly a domain, brand or piece of content is actually perceived across relevant channels.

Also known as: Visibility index, SEO visibility

Visibility describes how present a domain, brand or piece of content actually appears across the relevant channels. In search engine optimisation it is usually expressed as a visibility index that combines rankings, search volume and click probability. In social networks it is built from organic reach and view contacts.

How visibility is calculated

In SEO providers like SISTRIX or SEMrush calculate an in house index from thousands of monitored queries per market. Each position is weighted with the estimated search volume and the typical click rate. The result is a time series that reveals changes over weeks and months. In social terms visibility is derived from impressions and unique views.

What visibility tells you and what it does not

Visibility is a good indicator for trend developments of a domain or topic, but not a direct revenue signal. A domain can have high visibility for irrelevant queries and still produce little revenue. The relevant question is not the absolute number but which topics drive that visibility and how it changes per cluster.

Practical relevance in everyday marketing

In daily marketing visibility is a solid reporting and steering indicator across weeks and months. Anyone evaluating the index not as one number but split by topic clusters quickly sees which areas perform and which lack substance. Alongside search visibility, brand mentions and social reach are worth a look.
