Segmentation

Splitting recipients or customers into groups with shared traits so communication can be targeted more precisely.

Also known as: Audience segmentation, List segmentation

Segmentation splits a recipient or customer list into groups with shared characteristics. Rather than sending an identical message to everyone, each group receives a variant tailored to their behaviour, interests or life situation. The result is higher open, click and conversion rates and fewer complaints or opt outs.

Common segment criteria

Demographic traits such as gender, age or location are a first step but say little about buying behaviour. Behavioural data is stronger: last open, last click, last purchase, preferred product categories, response to trigger mails. In B2B you add company size, industry and role. The discipline of not cutting segments too small matters, otherwise reach and statistical meaning collapse.

What can go wrong

Common mistakes are outdated criteria, the wrong fields in the data model and the watering can approach despite available segments. Too many parallel segments increase complexity and maintenance effort sharply. A clear hierarchy with a few main segments and supporting sub segments is usually more efficient than a tangled web.

Segmentation in JD Mail

JD Mail supports segments based on master data, behavioural data and traits from previous mailings. You can filter recipients by open and click behaviour, signup date, source, tags or custom fields. The result are sending groups that can be addressed with relevant content and that keep the list overall clean and responsive.
