Native Ads
Ad format that adapts in form, function and design to the environment in which it appears.
Also known as: Native Advertising, Sponsored Content
Native ads are ad formats that adapt in form, function and design to the environment in which they appear. On news portals they look like editorial articles, on social networks like organic posts, in app feeds like normal list items. The aim is to sidestep classic ad blindness while still meeting disclosure obligations.
How native formats work
Common native ads include sponsored articles, sponsored posts, in feed ads in streams and recommendation widgets under articles. The format follows the layout of the host environment while the content delivers real value or entertainment. Native ads succeed mostly when the content fits the platform and is not bluntly sales driven.
Disclosure and quality rules
In Germany and many other countries native ads must be clearly marked as advertising, for example with labels such as Ad or Sponsored. Without clear labels you face legal warnings and trust loss. Poor content quality also damages both ad and platform image because users feel cheated when they hit clickbait.
In everyday advertising
In day to day advertising native ads suit content marketing goals such as reach, brand building or lead generation. They complement classic display and search ads because they engage deeper with topics. Measurement typically covers viewability, dwell time, clicks and conversions on follow up landing pages.
