Discovery Ads

Google ad format that runs in feeds like YouTube, Gmail and the Google Discover app and visually blends in with editorial content.

Also known as: Google Discovery Ads, Feed Ads

Discovery Ads are a Google ad format shown in feed environments such as the YouTube home page, the Gmail Promotions tab and the Discover app on mobile devices. The ads combine images or carousels with a headline, a description and a brand mark. Visually they sit close to editorial content while remaining clearly labelled as sponsored.

How Discovery Ads work

Delivery is steered by Google machine learning based on user interests, search behaviour and interactions with similar content. Advertisers upload images, logos, headlines and descriptions, and Google assembles them into matching ads automatically. Billing is usually cost per click or based on a goal such as conversions. Targeting is more precise than with classic display advertising.

What makes Discovery Ads useful

The format suits visually strong offers, brand building and pull strategies around product discovery. Reach is wide, targeting is sharp, and competition in many sectors is lower than for pure search ads. Pitfalls include vague targeting, weak image quality and a landing page that is not properly optimised for mobile, since most clicks come from smartphones.

In the media mix

Within the media mix Discovery Ads complement classic search and email campaigns, because they hit users who are not yet actively searching. A sensible sequence is attention through Discovery, deepening through email and closing through search. Building audiences from your own lists reduces wastage and ties the campaign more closely to existing contacts.
