Audience Analysis

Structured study of a target group by demographic, psychographic, and behavioural characteristics, used to align marketing precisely.

Also known as: Audience Analysis, Target Group Definition

Audience analysis describes the process of systematically describing and understanding a target group. It considers demographic features such as age, gender, and profession, psychographic features such as values and attitudes, and behaviour in search, purchase, and media usage. A solid analysis is the foundation for precise targeting in campaigns.

Approach in practice

Data comes from several sources, such as web analytics, CRM, market research, social listening, and qualitative interviews. From the data personas emerge, archetypal representatives of the audience with clear descriptions of need, triggers, and obstacles. These personas help to align messages, channels, and touchpoints consistently with the target group.

Pitfalls and success factors

A frequent weakness is mixing wishful target customers with actual customers, leading to personas that nobody buys. Static personas also age, regular updates are mandatory. Pitfall: too many personas dilute the focus, three to five well defined personas are often more valuable than twelve shallow profiles.
