YouTube Ads

Ad formats on the video platform YouTube, served before, during, or alongside videos and in search results.

Also known as: YouTube Advertising, Video Ads

YouTube Ads are the advertising formats of the video platform YouTube, bought through Google Ads and served in YouTube inventory. They range from short bumper ads through skippable TrueView ads to long in stream formats and discovery ads in search and on the home page. YouTube is one of the largest video ad platforms worldwide.

Ad formats at a glance

Skippable in stream ads play before or during a video and can be skipped after five seconds. Non skippable in stream ads are six to fifteen seconds long and must be watched. Bumper ads are six seconds, ideal for awareness. Discovery ads appear in search results and next to related videos. Masthead ads dominate the home page and are bought directly.

Targeting and measurement

Audiences can be defined via interests, life events, custom intent, topics, placements, and remarketing. Conversion tracking runs via the Google Ads conversion tag and Google Analytics. Pitfall: with broad audiences budget often flows into unsuitable placements, so regular placement reports and exclusion lists are mandatory.

Context in marketing work

YouTube Ads suit awareness, consideration, and in part performance campaigns with longer conversion paths. Video cannot be thought of in display banner logic, strong creative and a clear message in the first five seconds are decisive. In media plans YouTube is often combined with Meta, TikTok, and connected TV to spread reach broadly.
