TrueView Ads

YouTube ad format that only charges when a user actually watches the video or interacts with it.

Also known as: YouTube TrueView, Skippable In Stream

TrueView is the umbrella term for YouTube ad formats that only charge once a user actually watches the video or interacts with it. The best known variant is the skippable in stream ad, which can be skipped after five seconds. Charging happens when at least thirty seconds are watched or the user clicks the creative.

Available formats

TrueView in stream runs before, during or after a video and is skippable after five seconds. TrueView Discovery appears as a suggestion in search results and next to videos and starts on click. TrueView for Action adds a prominent call to action button to the ad that lifts click through to the landing page. All variants run through Google Ads and can be combined with the same targeting options as other YouTube formats.

Strengths and pitfalls

The first five seconds decide whether the video can have any effect at all. Anyone who shows the logo only at the end risks the brand message reaching no one. At the same time, the format gives the brand free visibility for the first five seconds, since that time is always shown before the skip button appears. Clear brand recognition within the first two seconds is therefore mandatory.

In everyday marketing

TrueView suits brands that need a storytelling format, are building the brand or are driving a clear conversion in a long customer journey. Anyone expecting pure direct response should compare performance with shorter in feed formats on TikTok or Meta. In combination with remarketing lists from YouTube itself, TrueView often delivers the best results because the ad does not start cold.
