Thumbnail
Reduced preview image representing a video, picture or document, used in overviews as a click incentive.
Also known as: Preview Image, Cover Image
A thumbnail is a small preview image that represents larger content. On video platforms, in image galleries, in email inboxes and in search results, the thumbnail decides within a fraction of a second whether a user clicks or keeps scrolling. That makes it one of the most important conversion elements anywhere.
What makes a good thumbnail
An effective thumbnail is readable even at small size, has a clear focal point and high colour contrast. Faces with strong expression work especially well on video platforms. Text on the thumbnail should be short and sharpen the promise of the content, not duplicate the title. Equally important is a consistent style so a channel or brand stays recognisable.
Technical minimums
Common resolutions are 1280 by 720 pixels on YouTube, 1200 by 630 pixels for Open Graph previews in social networks, and 600 by 314 pixels for Twitter Cards. Files are delivered as JPG or WebP, with file size kept under 200 kilobytes. On retina displays, at least double the pixel density is expected so the preview stays crisp.
In everyday marketing
In email marketing, the first image of the message often appears as preview in inbox listings, which is why a deliberately chosen hero image at the very top pays off. In platform list views and news feeds, the thumbnail is usually the only visual signal before the click. Sloppy work here costs reach even when the actual content is strong.
