Referral Marketing

Marketing strategy where existing customers are motivated to recommend new customers, usually with a reward for both sides.

Also known as: Word of mouth marketing, Customer referral programmes

Referral marketing uses recommendations from satisfied customers as an acquisition channel. Instead of buying third party ad space, the company motivates its existing base to recommend the offer further. Both sides are typically rewarded, the referrer and the referred.

How typical programmes work

A technical referral programme assigns each customer a personal link or code. Whoever buys or signs up through it is attributed to the referrer, who then receives a reward. That can be a discount, a credit, a physical prize or a payout. Clean attribution matters so nobody collects rewards for existing customers or duplicate sign ups.

When the model works

Referral marketing works particularly well for products with clear value, a convinced existing customer base and a low entry barrier. It struggles with complex offers that need long explanations and no brand awareness, or when the reward is too small to justify the effort. Data protection is a topic in itself, since personalised referral links require carefully managed processing and consent.

Practical relevance in JD platforms

In the JD platforms referral mechanics can be supported through segmented mailings, for example by sending each existing customer their personal referral link by email. Reporting shows who actively makes recommendations and which channels convert best. The normal mailing list thereby becomes a second acquisition channel that does not depend on paid media.
