Affiliate Marketing
Performance based marketing model in which sales partners get compensated for referred leads, clicks or sales.
Also known as: Referral Marketing, Partner Marketing
Affiliate marketing is a performance model in which sales partners, called affiliates, display advertising for a company and are only compensated when they measurably contribute to success. Compensation is typically per click, per lead or per sale, measured via tracking links or cookies.
How affiliate marketing works
An advertiser provides creatives and tracking links, affiliates embed these on their websites, newsletters or social media channels. When a recipient or visitor converts via an affiliate link, the conversion is attributed to that affiliate and paid out. Billing usually runs through specialised affiliate networks.
Pros and cons
The biggest advantage is low risk for the advertiser because costs only arise from measurable results. Drawbacks are dependency on the quality of affiliates, the effort for clean tracking and the risk of affiliate fraud through manipulated clicks or fake leads.
