Meta Title

Title tag in the HTML head of a page that appears as the headline in search results, browser tabs and social shares.

Also known as: Title Tag, Page Title

The meta title is the title of a web page stored in the HTML head. Search engines use it as the headline in the result snippet, browsers show it in the tab and social platforms reuse it when the page is shared. That makes it one of the most important on page elements you have.

What an effective title looks like

A length of 50 to 60 characters keeps search engines from truncating it. Relevant keywords belong at the start, followed by a clear benefit or brand hint. Each page needs a unique title so that users and search engines can tell pages apart.

What search engines do with it

Search engines often, but not always, stick to the title you provide. When the algorithm classifies a page differently, it may generate an alternative title from headings or brand text. Even so, the stored title is the strongest lever because it is used in most cases and influences both ranking and click rate.

In everyday SEO

In day to day SEO work teams test titles based on ranking and click rate. A different keyword order, an added brand name or a sharper promise can shift the click rate noticeably. Cleaner titles are often quicker to implement than larger technical SEO changes.
