Machine Learning

Subfield of artificial intelligence where systems learn patterns from data and make predictions, instead of relying on hand coded rules.

Also known as: ML, Statistical Learning

Machine Learning refers to methods where an algorithm derives patterns from sample data on its own and applies them to new inputs. Instead of writing fixed if then rules, you provide training data and let the model infer the rules itself. In marketing it powers prediction, segmentation and personalisation.

How a model learns

A model is trained on historical data such as past clicks, purchases or opens. During training the algorithm tunes its internal parameters so its predictions match the observed outcomes as closely as possible. After training you measure quality on a separate test set so the model has not just memorised the data but generalises to unseen examples.

Where machine learning pays off in marketing

Typical use cases include recommendation engines, lookalike audiences, churn prediction, dynamic pricing and spam detection. To make the effort worthwhile you need enough clean records, clearly defined target metrics and a team that can interpret the output. Without that foundation even the best model delivers noise.

Relevance to JD Mail and JD Partner

Inside the JD suite machine learning is used wherever large send and click data sets reveal patterns, for example to predict the best send time, to segment recipients or to flag suspicious list activity. Models run in the background and surface their results through the regular reports and segments you already use in JD Mail.
