Engagement Rate
Share of recipients or viewers who actively interact with a piece of content, for example through clicks, likes, comments or shares.
Also known as: Interaction Rate
The engagement rate is a metric showing the share of recipients or viewers who actively engage with a piece of content. Engagements include clicks, likes, comments, shares, saves or filling out a form, depending on the platform. The rate is calculated as the ratio of engagements to reach, either recipients or impressions.
Calculation and variants
The simplest formula divides the number of engagements by reach or impressions and multiplies by 100. Platforms calculate differently. Some use unique reach, others all impressions. When comparing, it matters which base is used so figures remain comparable. Each channel has benchmarks that help to classify your own values.
Significance and limits
A high engagement rate signals relevant content and an engaged audience. However, it says nothing about sales or business outcomes. Content with high engagement but no conversion effect is often entertainment rather than a sales lever. Cross platform comparisons are difficult because algorithms, audiences and formats differ significantly.
Relation to the JD platforms
In the JD platforms, the click through rate of a mail campaign serves as the classic engagement indicator. JD Mail shows it per campaign, per variant and per segment, so you can specifically analyse content with particularly high or low engagement rates. From there, you get hints on how to adjust content or send times for the next campaign.
