Google Merchant Center
Google platform for managing product data feeding shopping ads and free product listings in search.
Also known as: GMC, Merchant Center
Google Merchant Center is the data hub between an online shop and Google's advertising products. Retailers upload their product catalogue here, classically through a feed in XML or TXT format, alternatively via the Content API or direct shop integration. The data powers shopping ads, free product listings and Performance Max campaigns.
Mandatory feed fields
Each entry needs a unique ID, title, description, price, availability, image URL, brand, GTIN as well as shipping and tax information. Faulty or missing fields lead to rejections of individual items or whole accounts. The diagnostics tool in Merchant Center lists problems by category, helping you fix systematic errors quickly.
Optimisation in practice
Clean titles with brand, product type and key features lift visibility and click rate. High resolution images without watermarks look high quality and match Google's requirements. Up to date availability data avoids advertising items that are out of stock. Structured data on the product page complements the feed and creates consistency between shop and ads.
Context in daily e-commerce
Merchant Center is the gateway to Google Shopping and a central component of any e-commerce marketing stack. Combined with the JD platforms, an online shop can handle existing customer communication through JD Mail and new customer acquisition through Google Shopping. The platforms complement each other because they cover different stages of the customer relationship.
