Direct Traffic

Visitors who open a website directly without coming from a search engine, an ad or a referral from another page.

Also known as: Direct Visitors, Direct Sessions

Direct Traffic refers to visitors who open a website without a recognisable source. In an analytics tool the source shows as direct because the request carries neither a referrer nor a tracking parameter. In practice these are bookmarks, typed addresses, some app clicks and openings from email clients without a tracking tag.

How Direct Traffic appears

A visit falls into this bucket when the user types the domain directly or uses a saved bookmark. Many clicks from messengers, PDFs, desktop mail clients or mobile apps also send no referrer and end up as Direct Traffic. Even clicks from HTTPS pages to HTTP pages often lose their source. This distorts the report and makes a fair assessment harder.

How to read Direct Traffic

A high share of Direct Traffic can be a good sign, for example for a well-known brand with loyal returning visitors. It can also reveal tracking gaps when campaigns are delivered without UTM parameters. The key discipline is therefore clean campaign tagging with UTM values, so that search engines, ads and email clicks keep their source.

Direct Traffic in JD Media

When you use JD Mail or JD Partner for campaigns, tag every tracking link with clear UTM parameters or use the built-in click trackers. Email clicks then no longer appear wrongly as Direct Traffic in your external analytics tool, and you see the true channel performance. On subdomains and white-label sites it pays to add a referrer check, so that losses caused by browser or app quirks become visible.
