Yandex
Russian search engine and technology group with the largest market share in the Russian speaking world.
Also known as: Yandex Search, Яндекс
Yandex is the leading search engine in Russia and across much of Central Asia. The company also operates services for email, navigation, ride hailing, cloud computing, and an advertising network. In the Russian speaking web Yandex is often more important than Google, which is why international brands with audiences in these markets must optimise specifically for Yandex.
Search specifics
Yandex weighs ranking signals partly different to Google, traditionally with strong on page factors and its own algorithm called MatrixNet. Behavioural signals from Yandex Metrica also feed into the ranking. Local factors such as correct Cyrillic transliteration, regional directories, and Yandex Webmaster integration are mandatory.
Practical notes
Building reach via Yandex usually requires using Yandex Direct, the equivalent of Google Ads. A dedicated Yandex Webmaster account provides crawl data and optimisation recommendations. Pitfall: political and regulatory conditions can make ad placement difficult, especially for companies from western markets. A careful check of sanctions and compliance is required.
Context in marketing work
For companies doing business in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, or other CIS markets Yandex is a central platform. In western markets it barely plays a role, which is why it rarely appears in English speaking media plans. If you do enter the market it is best to work with local agencies that handle language, regulation, and cultural context.
