Pull Marketing
Marketing strategy that creates demand through content, recommendations and visibility, so customers approach the offer.
Also known as: Inbound Marketing, Demand Pull
Pull marketing is a strategy that creates demand through helpful content, good visibility and recommendations, so potential customers actively approach the offer. Unlike push marketing, which broadcasts messages out to the audience, pull marketing does not wait for the next ad placement but positions the brand as a helpful source that gets found.
Typical channels and measures
Classic pull mechanics are search engine optimisation, high quality blog content, whitepapers, webinars, tutorials, an in house podcast or YouTube channel, referral and word of mouth effects, and organic social media presence. This is often complemented by a strong community and a clearly maintained brand promise that drives repeat visits and recommendations.
Pros and cons
Pull marketing builds long term assets, since content and rankings keep working even without fresh ad budget. The downside is the long ramp up phase, as new content takes several months to develop reach, and search competition is a permanent force. Well executed pull marketing is therefore not a sprint but a multi year programme of continuous expansion.
Practical use
In day to day marketing, pull marketing works especially well together with permission marketing. Visitors won through search engines or content recommendations are guided into a newsletter list via clear lead magnets, and longer term engagement is then handled via email marketing. This turns organic reach into a directly addressable recipient base.
