Heatmap Tracking

Visualisation of user behaviour on websites, showing clicks, scroll depth and mouse movements as colour coded overlays.

Also known as: Heatmap Analysis, Click Heatmap

Heatmap tracking makes website visitor behaviour visually tangible. A tool records clicks, scroll depth or mouse movements and shows the result as a coloured overlay on the page layout. Red or yellow areas mark high activity, cooler tones show little attention. This produces hypotheses for optimisations that pure web analytics figures would not surface.

Types of heatmaps

Click heatmaps show where users click most often, even when the spot is not a link at all. This reveals false expectations about the interface. Scroll heatmaps show how far down users scroll on a page, indicating the effective page surface. Movement heatmaps and session recordings complement the picture and show user paths through a page.

Practice and data protection

Heatmap tools usually require a tracking snippet and a consent banner. In Europe, explicit consent is mandatory whenever personal data is captured, for example with session recordings of movements. Heatmaps become meaningful only with enough visitors per page, otherwise individual cases get overweighted. A clear question before the analysis prevents arbitrary interpretation.

Context in daily marketing

In day to day marketing, heatmaps are often used on landing pages to find conversion issues. Anyone driving traffic from a JD Leads funnel to a landing page that converts poorly quickly gets clues from a heatmap on whether users do not even reach the call to action or drop off at a specific spot.
