Graphics chips are specialised semiconductor components that perform image processing at high speed. They are the heart of every GPU and handle tasks like texturing, shading, geometry calculation and video decoding. In recent years they have additionally been used for machine learning, scientific simulations and data analytics.
Major vendors
The market is dominated by a small number of providers. Nvidia and AMD deliver the bulk of dedicated graphics cards, Intel offers integrated and dedicated chips. Apple develops graphics components directly inside its own Silicon system chips. In the mobile space, graphics cores from ARM, Qualcomm and Imagination Technologies are used.
Selection and deployment
For gaming applications, frame rate, resolution and feature scope such as raytracing matter. For AI training, compute power in specific data formats, memory capacity and bandwidth matter. In the cloud, graphics chips are typically installed in servers as accelerator cards and rented by the hour. Energy consumption and heat dissipation become their own topic in larger setups.
Context in marketing and operations
In day to day marketing, graphics chips matter when content is produced with AI image tools, because their speed depends directly on the hardware used. In the operation of services like JD Mail they play no direct role because sending and reporting run on classic CPU servers. Hardware requirements come exclusively from backend services, not from end user devices.
