Google SGE

Google's Search Generative Experience that shows generative AI answers above classic search results.

Also known as: Search Generative Experience, AI Overviews

Google SGE stands for Search Generative Experience and describes an extension of Google Search by generative AI answers. Instead of ten blue links, Google delivers a summarised answer with source previews, often including products, images or further suggestions. In many markets the feature has already rolled out as AI Overviews.

How it works

The AI answer is synthesised from multiple sources that appear as cards below the summary. Gemini models run in the background. Users can ask follow up questions without losing the search context. This means part of the answer moves above classic results and reduces the need to visit a website.

Impact on SEO

For website operators the effects are mixed. Content can appear as a source in AI Overviews and gain visibility, but click through rates drop when the answer is already shown above. Optimising for SGE means clear answers to specific questions, structured data, strong depth of content and trustworthy author information.

Context in daily marketing

In day to day marketing, SGE shifts SEO strategy because purely informational queries increasingly end in the AI answer. Conversion strong queries remain relevant. Websites attracting traffic via a JD Leads funnel benefit from adapting content to concrete user questions so both AI Overviews and classic results deliver reach.
