Featured Snippets
Highlighted answer boxes above the classic search results in which Google shows an excerpt from a page directly.
Also known as: Answer Box, Position Zero
Featured Snippets are answer boxes that Google shows above the classic results list. They present a short excerpt from a webpage that directly answers the query, accompanied by the source link. Common formats are paragraphs, numbered lists, bullet lists and tables. Earning a Featured Snippet brings clear visibility, but sometimes fewer clicks because the answer already sits in the snippet.
When Google shows Featured Snippets
Google uses Featured Snippets mostly for questions, definitions, instructions and comparisons. Selection follows a multi-step process: relevant content with clear structure, understandable language and a matching answer length is preferred. Often the snippet does not come from the top-ranking page but from one that answers the question particularly directly.
How to optimise for snippets
Content should pick up the question directly, ideally as a visible heading or in a clear introductory passage. Answers belong in a compact and complete paragraph of 40 to 60 words or in a well-structured list. Tables often work best for comparative queries. Clear headings, semantic HTML and supporting content below the answer matter, because Google evaluates the whole document, not just the snippet section.
In day to day SEO work
Featured Snippets are especially useful for making yourself visible even when the organic ranking is not in position 1. An honest assessment matters: snippets bring visibility but not necessarily more clicks. For purely informational queries the click rate can fall. For commercial or product-related queries the effort almost always pays off.
