Bounce Rate

Share of recipients of an email campaign for which the message could not be delivered.

Also known as: Bounce Quota, Return Rate

Bounce rate describes the share of all sent emails that do not reach the recipient and bounce back to the sender. It is one of the most important metrics for the quality of a recipient list and for the reputation of a sending infrastructure.

Why bounce rate matters

A constantly high bounce rate signals to mailbox providers like Gmail, Outlook or GMX that the recipient list is poorly maintained. This leads to worse inbox placement up to fully blocked sending IPs. Values above 2 percent are considered critical, above 5 percent dangerous for sender reputation.

Hard bounce vs. soft bounce

There are two types. Hard bounces are permanent delivery failures, e.g. because the address does not exist or the recipient domain is unreachable. Such addresses must be removed from the list immediately. Soft bounces are temporary problems like a full mailbox or a briefly unreachable server, here a retry is reasonable.

How JD Mail handles bounces

JD Mail processes incoming bounce messages automatically via its bounce engine. Hard bounces are deactivated directly, soft bounces get a retry limit. Bounce reportings are visible per campaign and per recipient in the dashboard.
